Peter Zumthor, I suppose this earth must have been so proud to have him as an architect. He is not much advertised in media and form finders barely mention him and about his pulse feelings for space. But, he is simply an Architect, it is as simple as that “An Architect”. And he is my favorite.

Actually, there are so many incredible things to contemplate in his designs, he does not just design; he feels the space, understands the basic needs of that space. “Basic needs”!!!! it is very huge terminology to explain, especially to today’s so-called high-tech world, and then he renders the space with the help of materials. He basically does not deals with the forms, once he had said “Forms follows everything”, which sounds very meaningful to my architectural notion. I guess form is a very easy way to start, forms are for business. He is the only one architect who explains about the “emotional space of the space” and, he urges to make the design typical, and then it becomes special.

The above images are of Saint Benedict Chapel, Sumvitg, Graubunden, Switzerland, 1988. This small Chapel is considered as one of his masterpiece and one of the most important selected designs for the Pritzker prize, 2009.

Its a form without a form. Its overall profile follows the deeper human experience and understanding of the architectural soul of that particular site. More than any mechanical process of construction, it is a building in true meaning, “building”; a profound Architectural process.

This small Chapel is a crown to that small hillock, it is an ultimate reward that an architect can offer to his/her site. Zumthor simply had created a moment there, where form merges into space and space again evolve with the form………..
