New York, the financial Capital of the world, a most high-tech city in the world. Is it!!! Zooming into the city and roaming around as a pedestrian, there is an amazing fragrance of eclecticism. What an amazing journey this city has traveled, from phases to phases, from style to style…..and ultimately from infinite to infinite. I am not sure how innocent city is perceiving imposed design on it but the adaptability of New York is very incredible. I suppose New York is the only city which could easily accept any design on it. Tremendous verities of designs have made the city a unique one. And the financial capital of the world is not as high-tech as it is considered. Out of its pseudo image, there is a very beautiful historic city within New York City.
The building in the background is one of the famous in New York, perhaps in the world, designed by Frank Gehry. I wouldn’t consider it an overrated building and do not have any bitterness against it. It indeed is a tribute to New York skyline. But my eyes stuck at this traditional neo-gothic building. I know nothing about this building nevertheless, there are too many “things” to observe/contemplate… At that moment, it was not just me standing and observing it but the building itself interacting with me, explaining its intrinsic values. A very well defined curvilinear edge, scales of the windows, and façade treatment… it gives the feel of growing; like a living organism and the building is respiring through its detailing. The proportional and harmonious variation from top to bottom has a strong visual impact. Staying out of just an individual idea, it looks like more about design and an architectural attempt at true meanings. Which is definitely missing in Gehry’s apartment design; which is standing as a faded metal post.
I am aware, I do not have enough knowledge to question Gehry’s attempt. Witnessing our cities, I am sure, either we are surrounded by architects with good intention but bad intelligence or good intelligence with bad intention. But in the case of Ghery, I do appreciate his both intelligence and intention. And to my childish understanding, these virtues “intelligence” and “intention” are the pathway to success. No doubt, so he is. As an individual Ghery is very successful but as a whole, I don’t even see his position, he has gotten lost in success. With him, he will win, we will not win, entire Architecture will not win. The sense of belonging, a sense of serenity…. which I found in this small beautiful building is not in Ghery’s apartment.
It has a purpose to stand there not as a traditional building but as a part of my architectural soul……I don’t have to feel for it, I simply fall for it. It has a vivid imagination. And its “Incredible detailing” ….it simply reminds me of human life, which is full of detailing as well. I may not have any guts to define life but I can realize life is made up of detailing…. or detailing of life make a “life”.
